“Mabel Luke Place” - a new place for Affordable Homes in Newbury
Work on preparing the site for the new development of 12 2-bedroom and 4 1-bedroom Almshouse flats has now started in Mill Lane.
During the summer of this year Feltham Construction of Newbury were selected by the Directors of Mabel Luke Trustee Ltd, and their professional advisers, after a rigorous tendering process.
The Flats, comprising three blocks, will replace the 4 original link houses (11-17 Mill Lane) which were originally built in 1928, but did not fully utilize the land available.
Trustees decided in 2013 that given the lack of availability of affordable housing within Berkshire where the waiting list is in excess of 4,000, it seemed logical to try to make better use of the whole parcel of land which The Charity owned in Mill Lane.
Allocation of homes will be done for those in the Greenham and Newbury area, based on need, and in collaboration with Homechoice West Berkshire. The development will bring more affordable accommodation for up 40 people in new thermally efficient housing, set in pleasant surroundings, without adjacent wasteland, compared with the 11 previous occupants of the 4 link houses which were built in 1928. Previous occupants have been offered the opportunity to return when the new Mabel Luke Place is completed.
When completed, the new development will carry the name “Mabel Luke Place”, which will be a fitting tribute to the memory of the founder of The Charity of Mrs. Mabel Luke.
To further cement the connection between old and new, the plaque from the front of the original building was removed and placed in storage so that it can be re-placed in a prominent position in one of the new blocks.
The Charity of Mrs Mabel Luke are keen to complete the building process in one phase. At the moment funding for the first 2 blocks is in hand but the third block still needs a further £120,000 to match the generous grant of £125,000 from Greenham Common Trust.
